Fiber Eyes Tutorial

In this tutorial I will attempt to take you through step by step how I made the eyeballs you can see in the title.
I used Paint shop pro7 and KPT's5 Fiber Optix to make them, but if you don't have Kpt's then you could easily use another image or filter for the iris's.

The steps below are meant as a guide you don't have to follow them to the letter, there are several places where you could experiment with your own settings.

Ok now on with the tutorial:

Open new image, 200x200, background transparent.
New layer, name eyeball.
Select your preset shapes tool , choose button035, retain style=checked, create as vector=unchecked, drag out an eyeball shape.

you will notice the eyeball has a dark grey outline, we need to get rid of it:
Change to your selection tool set it to Rectangle, anti alias unchecked. drag out a large rectangle around your eyeball then place your mouse cursor inside the selection and click once to close the selection around you eyeball.

Now got to selections../modify../Contract..
Number of pixels=1
Next.... Selection../Invert.. , then cut .  Deselect, the grey outline should now be gone :-)

Just one more thing to do to the eyeball before we move on...  the shadow is a little dark so were going to lighten it :-)
Choose your retouch tool ,set it to round, retouch mode=Lighten RGB..
using a large brush, stroke around the darker shading on your eyeball to lighten it slightly.

I
ris.. new layer, name it Iris,
Selection tool , set to circle, place your cursor in the center of your eye and drag out a fairly large circle for your iris, now hold down the ctrl key and drag out another circle inside the first one,

You are now ready to color the iris :-)
go to your plugins and select KPT5's FiberOptix...I'm not going to give you any settings here! just play around with the settings and gradients until you come up with an effect you like ;-),
tip: try some noise for an interesting effect. when your happy click OK.

Do not deselect!
make a new layer, go to.. effects../3d effects../drop shadow..
set color to white,
vertical & horizontal= -1
opacity=100, blur=5 ...OK,

still do not deselect!  make new layer, name it shading... go to.. effects../3d effects../cutout..
set color to black,
vertical & horizontal= -3
opacity= 40, blur= 15 ...OK,
Leave the selection!

Pupil..  go to.. selections../invert..   make your eyeball layer active and using your paint brush with paint set to black paint the inner circle.

If you want to make more eyes after you've finished this one, I recommend you save your selection,
go to selection../save to alpha channel..  click ok, name your selection Iris click ok again, you may now deselect!

this step is optional: using your retouch tool set to soften mode, on a small brush size, make sure your iris layer is active and just lightly go around the very outside edge to soften a little.
new layer, Now add a couple of highlights :-) you can place these wherever you want or use my settings on the right.
You're Finished!
all that remains to do is..
Layers../ merge../merge visible..  copy and paste as new image. you can now save your newly created eye as a picture tube!  file/export/picture tube.. name it and press ok.  your eye will then be available in the drop down menu of your picture tubes to use whenever you need it.
Make more eyes!
If you now undo the layer merge on your main image you can easily make more eyes now by simply switching off your iris layer, make new layer call it Iris2, (make sure the new layer is above the eyeball but below all your shading) load your iris selection from the alpha channel,  selections../load from alpha channel.. and apply Kpt's fiber optix. deselect,  remember to soften the edge of your new iris if you want to blend it a little.  layers../merge../merge visible.. copy & past as new image.
You now have another eye!  you can keep doing this as often as you like.
