Beak Tutorial 1

In this tutorial I will attempt to take you through step by step how I made the little beaks you can see in the title. You can also view some more examples near the bottom of this page, I have put a photo strip of a little crow I made  using variations of the one beak.

I used Paint shop pro7 and KPT's5 Shape Shifter to make them.

The steps below are meant as a guide you don't have to follow them to the letter, there are several places where you could experiment with your own settings.

Ok now on with the tutorial:

Open New Image 250x250 background transparent.
set your foreground colour to null and set your background colour to the colour you want for your beak ( I chose orange for this one)
Click your preset shapes tool , and choose ellipse, with these settings:
Retain style= Unchecked
Antialias= Checked
Creat as vector= Checked
Draw an ellipse.

Now click on your Object selector tool and choose node edit.  Refer to image for movement of nodes.  I pulled the side nodes out and up, then pulled the bottom node down a little to achieve the shape for the beak.
(you can experiment a bit with shapes if you wish)

Once you're happy with the shape for your beak, right click on the beak layer in your layer palette and from the drop down menu choose.. Convert to raster.  Now go to selections/ select all..... then selections/float.
OR  shortcut keys: Ctrl+A then Ctrl+F

convert to raster & float

With your beak selected.. go into effects/plugins/KPT 5 /shapeshifter, select coolkitchen for your environment, and set your environment colour to one that matches your beak colour. make sure both your shadow and glow options are switched off!  Here are the settings I used....  you are aiming for a nicely rounded shape.....  when you like the look of your beak click on the tick in the bottom right-hand corner to return to PSP

KPT settings for beak

Selections/select none.
change your foreground colour to Black and background colour to Null.
then click on your draw tool, set to Freehand line, width 5, antialias=checked, create as vector= Unchecked, Close path= Unchecked.
Draw a curved line across your beak just inside the edges. (refer to picture for placement)

draw mouth

With your magic wand tool, click on the black line to select, then go to selections/Invert.

select mouth

Now we are going to add a slight Inner Bevel.
Go to Effects/3d effects/Inner Bevel... Choose the Soft edge preset from the presets list, Change the smoothness setting to 22, leave all other settings as they are, click OK.

Apply inner bevel

Selections/select none.
your beak is now finished! all that's left to do is export it as a tube.  Drag your beak layer from your layer palette out to an empty space in your work area, then export this image as picture tube, it will then be available to use from your tube menu.
Lets make more!!!!!.............

export as picture tube

While you still have your main image open, why not make some more beaks!  Click on the undo button to remove all steps until you have just your plain beak with shapeshifter applied!  now experiment drawing different shapes of lines for your mouth, Here are a few examples in this image, when you're happy just repeat the select and inner bevel steps as above, then export your new beak as another Picture tube!
Keep repeating these steps to  create several different beaks from this image!

different mouth styles

Should you wish to make an Open beak........
Undo back to your plain beak with shapeshifter applied...... then go to your selection tool set to ellipse, antialias=Checked, feather=Unchecked.  take your mouse curser to the center of your beak, roughly inline with the side bulges, and drag out an oval selection.....

select opening for beak

Now flood fill the oval selection with black.

flood fill open beak

Selections/Invert...  and apply the same inner bevel as we did before.  Deselect and export as a picture tube!

That's it! you should now have a few different beaks to choose from, I hope you have fun with these, and thank you for doing my tutorial.
